Dry Regions Arid and semi-arid regions together make up 26 percent of the land area of Earth, and deserts comprise 12 percent of the land. The great deserts of the world are found in the Sahara in North Africa, the Chihuahua and Sonoran deserts of Mexico and the southwestern United States, and the Gobi desert in Asia.

Grasslands are generally located between deserts and forests. The major temperate grasslands are located in central North America in the United States, in Southeast South America in Uruguay and Argentina, and in Asia along the southern portion of Russia and Mongolia.
